Village FaceBook Group

There is a very active Stawell and Sutton Mallet FaceBook group. You may apply to join, and if you live in Stawell or Sutton Mallet you will be admitted. As the group is getting rather large now we have decided to restrict members who are not villagers to those who have something significant to offer the group or who have a genuine interest in the community. If you just want to know what is going on then everything is posted here, on the website.

Sending Christmas Cards To Your Neighbours

Instead of walking all round the village with your cards (with apologies if you’ve already done that 🙂), why not send your Christmas wishes to the whole village by displaying a card in the church porch and donating the money you save to charity? You could give an extra donation to the Foodbank, or pick your favourite charity, it’s up to you

Parish Council Meeting Minutes: the minutes of the December meeting are available under the Organisations/Parish Council menu at the top of this page. Seems like an interesting meeting, well worth reading the minutes.

Salvation Army Christmas Present Appeal:  A message from Karen Heffernan who has now taken all the Christmas presents donated by the good folk of our villages to the Salvation Army HQ in Bridgwater.
I took all the Christmas Present Donations round to the Bridgwater Salvation Army on Thursday evening. Lieutenants Heather and Jonathan Culshaw were very grateful for the generosity of the people of Stawell and thank them very much indeed. They have quite a task ahead, matching the presents to the age of the children, together with the wrapping and distribution, but it all means that no child in the Bridgwater locality should be without a present this Christmas. I would also like to add my thanks to the good people of Stawell who dropped off your very generous donations to me.
MOMSS: The December/January colour digital edition of MOMSS is now published under the Organisations/Church menu

As the weather gets worse and Christmas approaches the demand for help from the Bridgwater Foodbank becomes ever greater. Jeanette Scott collects food contributions in Stawell and ensures it is all delivered to the Foodbank in Bridgwater.

If you are able to contribute then all you have to do is drop off food items in the box outside Jeanette’s house right in the middle of Stawell. Useful items might include tinned meat, fruit and fish, biscuits and snack bars, toiletries, pasta sauces, tinned veg, tomatoes, cereal, instant mash, rice..and the list goes on.

You can find out more about the foodbank and other ways you can help at Bridgwater Foodbank

Parish Council Meeting: The next meeting will be in the village hall at 7:00pm. The agenda is published under the “Organisations” menu.

Complaints about the Stepping Out Group:  The VHC have now received two official complaints in respect of the ‘Stepping Out Group’. One complaint is from a Stawell resident and the other from Sutton Mallet. As a result the matter will be addressed at the forthcoming coming AGM. If you are able to attend to voice your opinion, or if you are unable and still have an opinion to take note of, please email me on…..simonofstawell@hotmail.com. Many thanks Simon.’

Christmas Pig Roast Event

Due to the latest concerns about COVID 19 the Village Hall Committee have decoded to cancel this event. Sad, but better to keep ourselves safe from the latest variant.

Avian Influenza Prevention Zone

Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service has advised that as of 5pm on the 3 November 2021 an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone was declared across Great Britain. This means that all bird keepers in Great Britain (whether they have pet birds, commercial flocks or just a few birds in a backyard are required by law to take a range of bio-security precautions.  Click Here for details of all the precautions to be taken.

What's happening in November (and a bit about December)

Green Door Donation: Margaret Williams has received this letter acknowledging receipt of a donation for £500. This money was raised at the recent Lockdown Art Exhibition. The letter explains how the money is used to support the elderly, vulnerable and homeless in the Street area.

Remembrance Service

The Remembrance Service will take place on Sunday 14 November at 3pm in St Francis Church Stawell.

Our service will include musicians from the Burtle Silver Band including a trumpeter or bugler for the
last post and reveille.

During this service we remember those people of Stawell and Sutton Mallet who gave their lives in the First World War, the Second World War, and the Cyprus conflict. For the Cyprus conflict, we usually have an attendee who was a classmate of the deceased. All this is the least we can do for those who helped to secure the freedom that we now enjoy.

YOGA: All the dates for the yoga classes are now posted on the calendar.

So good to see that the HUB Cafe has now returned as a regular feature (fingers crossed) of village life.

After the roaring success of the October HUB which brought together the arts and crafts produced by villagers during lockdown alongside the HUB itself, we now have the November event with the annual Christmas Craft Fair.

There is always a fantastic range of delightful items just crying out to become presents for family, friends and loved ones this Christmas.

Funeral of Jack Harding

The funeral of Jack Harding, a much respected and long time resident of the village will take place on Wednesday 3rd November, at 2pm in Stawell church.

Regrettably, as space in the church will be limited due to Covid restrictions, there will only be a few spaces left after family members and invited guests/speakers have been accommodated. Please feel free, however, to take up a place along Ford Lane before the service or join the family in the churchyard, where Jack will be interred after the service.

Villagers and friends are welcome to be present and leave flowers for the grave, if wished. There will be a collection in aid of Cancer Research also. Donations can be made through John Biffen of H Biffen & Sons.

The family would like to extend a welcome to everyone to join them afterwards at the village hall for refreshments and reminiscences.

October Happenings and News

October MOMSS: A somewhat late (my fault) digital copy of the October edition of MOMSS has been published under the Organisations/Church menu.

Parish Council Meeting (1 November):  The agenda for the November meeting of the Parish Council is available under the Organisations/Parish Council menu.

Arts and Craft Exhibition

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the exhibition at the weekend in the Village Hall, the exhibitors, all the helpers on both days, visitors and, of course, the Village Hall Committee.

Thank you also to all those who so generously donated to the Open House Project for the homeless in Street.  We are delighted to say that the total amount raised was £500. An amazing sum so thank you to you all. This is going to make a huge difference to the homeless folk in Street.

This felt like a very special event to celebrate the return to our nearly normal lives after Lockdown.

Parish Council: Minutes for the October meeting are now posted under the Organisations/Parish Council menu.

Great news that we have the long-awaited return of the HUB Cafe. Doors open at 10:30am until 1:00pm. All the old favourite drinks and eats will be available.

As a bonus, the Cafe will share the hall with the Lockdown Arts and Crafts Exhibition.

The exhibition brings together work done by members of our wonderfully creative community. If you can’t make it to the HUB Cafe then the exhibition remains open on Sunday (17th) afternoon.

September Stuff (and heads up on October too!)

Parish Council Meeting: The next meeting of the PC will take place on 4 October. The agenda is now available under the Organisations/Parish Council menu.

Postponed due to forecast bad weather. Never fear – it’ll now take place on Saturday 9 October

Why not go along to the yard at Manor Farm on Saturday 2 October at around 11am. Bring visitors, friends, and family and enjoy a walking quiz exploring Stawell.

After the quiz, you can enjoy a Ploughman’s Lunch back in the yard.

Adults pay just £5 while children go free.

Yoga: Yoga is restarting in the Village Hall. October dates are published on the calendar.

Sad news: Karen Heffernan has had a telephone call from Rose Stabbins to let her know that sadly, her husband, George Stabbins had passed away aged 84 years. Until recent years they were long-standing residents of Stawell, George having moved here when he was just 5 years old. George regularly took part in the ploughing competitions and was well known in the local farming community. Rose and George had been married for 61 years.

The funeral is on Monday 4th October at 12.00 noon at Sedgemoor Crematorium. Family flowers only, but donations can be made to Diabetes UK.

Pet Service: St Francis Church, Sunday 26th September
at 10 a.m.  All pets and their owners are welcome. Refreshments afterwards.

MOMSS: The latest edition of MOMSS has now been published under the “Organisations/Church” menu.

Stawell and Sutton Mallet Lockdown Arts and Crafts Exhibition

An exciting exhibition of Arts and Crafts, produced by the wonderfully creative villagers of Stawell and Sutton Mallet during the lockdown, will take place over the weekend of 16/17 October.

On Saturday 16th the exhibition will share the hall with the Hub Cafe and on Sunday 17th the exhibition will be open in the afternoon.

Look out for the flyer coming through your door soon which has more information and the names and telephone numbers of the organisers.

Please phone one of the organisers, or email stawellart@gmail.com, with details of your entry by 30 September. This will allow the team to plan ahead and allocate space.

Please submit your entry (or entries) to an organiser by 12 October. As this event is a celebration of the creativity and resilience of our villagers over these challenging months so entries will only be accepted from people living in Stawell and Sutton Mallet

Although we will do our very best to look after your art or craft works, storage and exhibition will be at the owner’s risk. Work can also be brought along to the Village hall on the morning of 16th October by 9.20 a.m. by prior arrangement only.

All exhibits will need to be accompanied by a postcard, which could include such details as: title, name if wished, medium used, for sale and any other information, for use as part of the exhibition. All pictorial artwork can be mounted, but, if framed, would need to be accompanied by a display easel if possible.

Don’t keep your talents hidden. Show us yours and we’ll show you ours! You ain’t seen nothing yet, Grayson!

Fantastic News! So good to see social events returning to the Village Hall.

With FREE ENTRY, Pizza, Good music and the bar it will be a great party.

Get it in your diary straight away. See you there 🙂
